The most important thing to know is that the grotto only opens in calm, low-tide seas, and can close at short notice — no operator can guarantee entry. The trick is to book the boat tour for the whole Capri experience (the caves, the Faraglioni, the swimming) and treat the grotto as a bonus. Do that, and a closed grotto never ruins the day. How entry really works
You don't sail in on the tour boat. At the entrance you switch to a small rowboat run by the local grotto boatmen, who row you through the low opening a few at a time — usually for a separate fee that's often not included in the tour price. It's quick, a little chaotic and brighter around midday. Bring cash for the fee and tips.
Choosing your tour
Small-group boat tours give the best mix of sights, swimming and value; private boats add flexibility for families or a special day. Pick a departure point near your base — Sorrento is a short crossing — and check whether the grotto entry fee and hotel pickup are included. Go in the morning for calmer seas and smaller crowds.
